MESSIAEN AND HIS LEGACY
October 18, 2002 - 8:00 p.m., Old First Church
BluePrint kicks off with a celebration of Olivier Messiaen. Enjoy Messiaen's masterpiece, Oiseaux exotiques, and composition by musicians who followed his tradition, including a work for 12 cellos by Jean-Louis Florentz; the American premiere of Michèle Reverdy's Concerto for Orchestra and Gilles Tremblay's latest string quartet. The Conservatory's New Music Ensemble with Pianist Jacqueline Chow perform.

MESSIAEN'S LEGACY CONTINUES
October 20, 2002
BluePrint presents Messiaen's famous Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps, composed during his emprisonment in a W.W.II work camp. Program also includes Georges Benjamin haunting Upon Silence and other works by Messiaen's students Tristan Murail and Qigang Chen. Performances by Ensemble Parallèle.

CITY COMPOSERS

Experience the spectacular organ of St. Mark's at this celebration of San Francisco composers, featuring Sour Music, a new commissioned work by Alden Jenks. Program also includes Conrad Susa's Fantasy Tango, Dan Becker's Vanishing Point, and David Conte's Songs of Consolation, with soprano Heather Clemens and organist Rodney Gehrke. Mezzo-soprano Marie Bafus joins the Conservatory's New Music Ensemble for David Garner's exotic Seven Nocturnes.

STRINGS AT THE SHINE
December 6, 2002
Join us for an inspiring new music for guitar, voice, harp and strings. Parallèle Ensemble premieres a commissioned work by Dusan Bogdanovic featuring renowed guitar soloist David Tanenbaum and mezzo-soprano Wendy Hillhouse - with sixteen specially handcrafted ceramic gongs. Also Henze, Berio and Lou Harrison. Finally, the American premiere of Dimitri Yanov-Yanovski' s dramatic Lacrymosa for voice and string quartet.

MILHAUD'S AMERICA

Symposium
Hosted by the Conservatory, professor Faun Tiedge is joined by nationally distinguished scholars for a day-long symposium on Milhaud's American legacy. Symposium includes noontime concert listed below.

First concert:
Composer Darius Milhaud left his mark on American music after settling in the Bay Area. The concert features his chamber music and works for some of his leading students, including Richard Felciano, William Bolcom and William Smith. The Conservatory's New Music Ensemble and faculty perform.

Second concert
BluePrint's celebration of Milhaud continues with a rare performance of his dramatic work for chorus and chamber ensemble,
Cantate pour l'inauguration de Musée de l'Homme. Includes the premiere of Api, a commissioned work by Elinor Armer - a student of Milhaud. Performances by Ensemble Parallèle and the UC Santa Cruz Chamber Singers.

CELEBRATING CHOU WEN-CHUNG'S 80TH BIRTHDAY
April 2 and 3, 2003
Join composer Chou Wen-chung for the world premiere of his Octet, co-commissioned by BluePrint and Speculum Musicae. The program includes Varèse's Integrales, and music by Chinary Ung, Isang Yun, Joji Yuasa and Hi-Kyung Kim. Produced in collaboration with the Conservatory's New Music Ensemble and faculty perform.

WORL WOMEN MUSIC TODAY
April 23, 24 and 25, 2003
Enjoy music from the 2002 International Women Composers Festival in Seoul brought to San Francisco by BluePrint, the American Composers Forum (SF chapter) and the Pacific Rim Music Festival. Chamber works by Shulamit Ran and Kaija Saariaho; the American premiere of Chan-Hae zlee's To Hwang Seoung, and Young-Ja Lee's new solowork for Kayakeum. Performance by Ensemble Parallèle.
