BluePrint 2010-2011: Between the Lines

Welcome to Between the Lines, the ninth season of the BluePrint new music project.  This season, our program explores the intimate relationship between music and verse with a unique roster of composers, poets, and playwrights.  First, Anne Sexton’s deeply personal poetry comes to life in David Conte’s Sexton Songs, along with the West Coast premiere of Laura Schwendinger’s violin concerto Chiaroscuro Azzurro.  For our second event, we join the American Conservatory Theater to present Tom Stoppard and André Previn’s Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, a powerful allegory that synthesizes the orchestra and the stage in provocative ways.  This show will also feature Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky’s lyrical Lux Aeterna, a tribute to composer Edison Denisov.  Our next performance showcases the compelling chamber music of author and composer Paul Bowles, an American premiere by Michèle Reverdy, and the music of Maurice Ohana.  Then, in a special event at the Herbst Theater, the Conservatory’s professional ensemble-in-residence, Ensemble Parallèle, will explore the convergence of two creators of inimitable style, as we dive into the dreamlike world of Philip Glass’ opera Orphée, based on Jean Cocteau’s 1949 film. Our series resumes with Manly Romero’s Hoefer Prize-winning composition, Dopplegänger, along with pieces by Andrew Imbrie and Hi Kyung Kim.  Our season will come to a close with an homage to Andrew Imbrie, with guest artists the Borromeo Quartet.  We hope that you will join us as we uncover the unexpected connections between words and music.
